Teachers Model

Why should teachers create their own personal philosophy and model of classroom management…?
rather than, for example, utilize a “school wide” set of rules generated for all of the classrooms? Why is an individual teacher’s set of “personal” rules and expectations so important?
The rules in the classroom need to fit the teacher’s personality and the subject matter being taught. If the teacher likes to encourage class discussion/debate, maybe it is not necessary to enforce the “raise your hand to get permission to speak” rule as long as only one person talks at a time.
The school rules give broad guidelines, but classroom management is more than just a set of rules. It involves having procedures in place that the students know how to follow on a daily basis. The procedures and behavior expectations might be different for a math class than for a science class or an English class, and there are different expectations for freshmen than for seniors. Also, some teachers have a more easy-going personality and might like a less formal classroom atmosphere with more cooperative learning, while others want students to sit quietly in rows and work by themselves.
A teacher will have a hard time enforcing a set of rules that goes against his/her personality. In order for the class to run smoothly, the teacher needs to feel in charge and comfortable. That is why teachers are given some leeway in their classroom management-to make them the most effective teacher they can be.
